Scolding it at every chance, making it train or fight when tired, that sort of thing. Be aware that it will probably break your barn to run away or end up in the hospital along the way, which is rather costly.

Indeed. You have to do such things as feeding it potatoes, never praise it, punish it every chance you get, and never rest it. This will lead it to running away, smashing it's barn, and refusing to work, which will cost you money. Make sure you have a very good stockpile of money. That said, when you have the final barn, your monster cannot/will not break it (at least, I've never experienced it).
