A dark, mystical monster based on Anubis, the Egyptian jackal god of the underworld. Abyss wields a staff with magical powers, mostly which involve death and black magic. They seem to have connections to both the Falco and Xenon species, two other powerful monster families.
When used in combining, they usually create dark and occasionally skeletal monsters that can wield magic just like the primary breed.
Interestingly enough, the Abyss (or a strikingly similar monster) was depicted in hieroglyphs on the walls of the White Tower in Monster Rancher Explorer long before it was introduced as a playable monster.
Etymology[]
Its name could be referring to the fact that it represents chaos in the way that the Xenon species represents cosmos. "The Abyss" is also often used as a reference to Hell or the Underworld, which Template:Ns, the Egyptian jackal god, ruled over.
