Dr. Talico is the archaeology professor at Torble University who comes by your ranch to ask if you would be willing to accompany him on an exploratory mission to the Kawrea Volcano. He is searching for something called the Shrine of the Gods (which is probably the floating Shrine seen in Monster Rancher 3), where he believes that God hid the Mystery Discs containing the most powerful monsters.
On the journey, you do not find the shrine, but you do witness a Phoenix leaving the Gemini Volcano, and find the Phoenix Feather which allows you to combine in order to get one. Later Talico returns and asks Colt to accompany him on another journey (which is probably where her taste for exploring began...by the time the anime series occurs, she is a full-fledged explorer herself).
