Tears is the twenty-first episode of Season 2 and the forty-seventh overall episode of the Monster Rancher anime series. It aired in Japan on March 18, 2000.
Synopsis[]
Genki and the others attempt to lead Moo away from the Phoenix, when Pixie and an army of the Pirate Dragon army, led by Falcon. Pixie is seriously hurt while fighting, but instead of finishing them off, Moo goes berserk. He seems to have lost control, most likely because Holly's father is fighting against him inside Moo's body. Meanwhile, Pixie is in danger of becoming a lost disk. Big Blue decides to give Pixie his body's life energy to save her, even though it means his body will die. Once this has been done Pixie, now purified of Moo's corruption, becomes Granity. Holly realizes that in order to give the Phoenix its full power they might have to fuse it with the other Searchers.

The Searchers continue running away from Moo, but he doesn't even need to follow them as a single flame shot is enough to almost get them. They're sent flying forwards from the impact of his attack on the ground, creating a small crater, shocking the group with his new power. Moo laughs at them, asking if they won't keep running away and they promptly do, but he keeps firing flames ahead of them, forcing them to run in other directions. He's amused by their attempts to escape, telling them to keep "dancing" for him. He then extends his wings and effortlessly flies towards them, landing right in their way to stop them in their steps. Moo asks if they want him to explain why they're so desperate, saying that it's because the Phoenix is nearby. The Searchers are surprised to hear that he's found out and he focuses with closed eyes, quickly discovering where his body lies, pointing in his direction. The enormous monster then starts walking away, towards the Phoenix and Genki tries to distract him, telling him to return and fight them. When Moo ignores him, the group decides to charge at him to make him stop. Holly tries to go with them but Golem doesn't let her, warning her that it's too dangerous for her, with Suezo's agreement. She reluctantly stays behind while the others leave.
Genki and the five monsters block Moo's path, making him laugh as he jokingly asks if they truly think that they can stop him. The boy then helps his friends recharge their guts, with an intense beam of energy flying into the sky and then descending over each of them. As they receive Genki's energy, they each fire an attack (Mocchi cannon, Hare's punch, Tiger's lightning, Golem's punch, Suezo's tail attack) that joins with the others to compose a bigger beam directed at Moo's face. Upon making contact, it explodes, making them believe that it was enough, but after the clouds covering him dissipate, Moo is shown to be completely unharmed. He fires another flame at them, sending them flying away from that spot.
Out of Moo's hand comes a lilac-colored bubble that he drops on the snow. Genki gets trapped inside the bubble, which then ascends towards Moo's hand. The rest of the Searchers become obviously worried about the boy who keeps hitting the bubble, trying unsuccessfully to get out. Moo laughs, saying that he's the first one he'll kill, right before extending his thumb and index finger and bending them towards the center of his palm again, electrifying the bubble, making Genki scream in pain. When the others scream his name, Moo fires a flame at them, assuring them that they'll all die soon, shocking him again as he tells him to die. Genki screams again and, all of sudden, a lightning attack fired by Pixie impacts Moo's face, forcing him to lose his grip on the electric bubble. It disintegrates quickly, releasing Genki, who gets caught midair by Pixie.
Mocchi and the rest are relieved to see her saving him when they couldn't. Pixie asks if he's okay and Genki tiredly assures her that he knew she'd come. Pixie reveals that she didn't come alone and the two look away into the sky, seeing Falcon and his Pirate Dragons approaching, carrying Big Blue in a swing. The Searchers rejoice seeing that they're all there to help them battle. Falcon commands them to attack, and all dragons fire straight into Moo's face, earning a painful grunt from the giant. A few dragons land and pick the Searchers up to carry them on their backs in the air. Pixie drops Genki safely on Falcon's back, and the boy thanks him for coming. The Dragon captain happily reminds him that he promised he would right before Pixie speaks to Genki again. She asks if he remembered captain Horn, Allan, Eddy and Jim and when he confirms it, she tells him that they're all fighting battles in variosu places against the baddies. Horn, his Rockies, Allan and his Worms are seen fighting Arrow Heads, Jells and Weeds on The Jolly Roger; Eddy and other humans piloting iron birds are firing lasers from their ships at the Stone Dragon; Jim and Eared Mew are seen leading Henger, Ducken, Celious, Dragoon, Centaur, a few Color Pandoras, Kato, the Tainted Cat brothers and Jagd Hound on an attack elsewhere (the brothers and Kato are shown fighting off some Jells and Kuros).
Genki feels emotional after hearing these news, his eyes getting glassy as a result. The dragons carrying Big Blue bring him closer to the boy and he tells Genki that although they couldn't be there, they gave them their blessings. The Searchers then express their desire to do all their best for the sake of their friends who are fighting elsewhere just like them. Moo laughs at them, mocking their enthusiasm, but Genki encourages everyone to fight anyway. Moo fires some flames at the dragons but they dodge them just in time. Genki struggles, grunting loudly as a pink aura surrounds him, passing it into his friends as well, powering them up. The dragons dodge another flameshot and the monsters' guts aura lights up. The dragons that weren't carrying anyone fire lasers at Moo and the others become engulfed in light, as they all, lead by Genki, strike Moo together before flying into the sky.
Finally, this attack causes a reaction in Moo, making him fall backwards in pain. The dragons fly in circles around the immense smoke cloud produced by Moo's fall on the snow, as they wonder if that did the trick. Falcon indirectly calls the baddie a weakling but Genki tells him to not to be sure of their victory just yet. Some dragons start chanting about their success but an overwhelming flamethrow fired from within the smoke catches some of them by surprise, disintegrating them in the spot. Moo stand back up, triumphantly stating that he was only testing himself to see how much he could take, proclaiming now that his reunified body is invincible. Genki tells everyone to try again, and immediately after the pink aura returns to them, Moo flies up to meet the dragons in the air and fires at them again, catching some of them in the flames and instantly destroying a fraction of them, while only seriously damaging the others, making them fall to the ground. Moo laughs and repeat the attack, getting the same result, forcing Genki to command a retreat.
When they change their course, flying away from there, Moo chases after them and readies another attack, but he's interrupted when Pixie flies by him and drops a Big Bang attack on his face, temporarily blocking his sight and lightly damaging him. Moo's eyes catch her as she escapes and one of his hands manages to slash her wings off. Unable to fly, Pixie falls helplessly before getting caught by Moo's hand inside another bubble. Genki gasps, remembering what happened to him inside one of those and Moo laughs at his new prisoner, before electrifying her as well. Big Blue and everyone else watch in horror as he tortures her in the air. Moo goes back to the ground and taunts the Searchers, asking if he should crush her to death. Immediately afterwards, he shocks Pixie, making her scream in pain and forcing Big Blue to jump off his swing to try and stop Moo. He slaps him away effortlessly, making him hit the snow. Moo taunts him again, saying that she's in trouble as he electrifies the bubble again. Big Blue becomes so outraged at this situation that a dark aura completely surrounds him. Moo encourages him to keep feeling hatred, saying that his soul hungers for it. As he continues torturing Pixie, Big Blue's hate for him grows, and Tiger yells at the Golem, trying to convince him to stop feeding his evil soul. Moo switches his focus to Tiger now, reminding him of how he killed his brother, asking how it felt to fight his own flesh and blood, forcing him to hate the baddie. Moo is pleased at the dark aura of hate emanating from Tiger, asking for more so he ends up joining his side. Tiger can't resist his hatred, and Genki tries to shut Moo up, ordering him to release Pixie. Moo disregards him, telling him to light the flame in his evil heart, to let anger fill him and make him a baddie, feeling at ease, right before electrifying Pixie again. Big Blue, Tiger and Hare keep being filled with hatred, feeding Moo, but Holly screams, stopping this madness.
All eyes focus on her as she stands now a few meters away from Moo. She begs at the monster to stop if there's even a small bit of her father left. Moo says that he's happy to see her there, calling her his child as he explains that she's seen her father's soul becoming possessed by evil, watched him destroy her village and now she's witnessing hell again, concluding that there's no one else who can feel more hate than her. He tells her to drag her friends down with her and let her hate come out, she asks her father if there's truly nothing left of him, and Moo replies that he's already been consumed by his evil soul. He continues taunting her, saying that he'd have loved to watch her witnessing the pitiful look on his face as he died. She gasps, asking who he is then, and Moo claims to be her father as well and the ultimate monster, fueled by hate and evil. He claims that as far as he's concerned, she's only a vessel for creating hate, laughing maniacally. When a dark aura starts surrounding her, he asks for more, calling her a catalyst that will set off an endless chain of hatred.
Moo raises his hand, still holding the bubble where Pixie is trapped, for everyone to see how her life is close to its end, telling them to let all their hate out. He tortures her again, claiming that he'll give the same treatment to the other monsters fighting against baddies in other places. Everyone, Searchers and dragons alike, feel powerless in this situation and their hatred for Moo grows exponentially, becoming shrouded in a black smoke of hate that is directed straight into his chest, feeding the giant.
He enjoys this greatly, asking for more to feed his evil soul. His focus is suddenly lost when something disturbs him from the inside, becoming numb and letting Pixie fall from his hand and out of the bubble. Big Blue runs to catch her before she hits the ground, being the only thing that momentarily brings some relief to the Searchers' hearts.
Moo screams out of the blue, his eyes wide open, glowing red as he looks disconnected from reality. He holds his own head in pain, closing his eyes as he voices "Who are you?" before shouting in discomfort; everyone wonders what's happening to him. An inner battle is taking place between Holly's father and Moo's true evil soul. The human, in his corrupted form, is seen falling vertically, headfirst and holding his head, as a black snake-like spirit with several heads and red eyes flies in circles around him. The dark soul wraps itself tightly around Holly's father as he begs to be let go, losing the internal struggle.
When Moo finally opens his eyes, they're yellow instead, with black mascara-like details around them, as well as additional nubs coming from his cheeks and sharper, bigger fangs. He flies away after emitting a loud screech in an altered voice. In the air, he starts firing even more powerful beams in seemingly random directions, hitting far away mountains, grounds, ignoring the nearby army of monsters that was fighting him not long ago. Genki asks what's happening and Hare wonders if this will become like the ancient wars, with Tiger explaining that the evil soul will try to take control of everything. Suezo adds that then there'd be no allies or enemies, and Golem guesses that Moo became a creature that only seeks to destroy everything.
Moo leaves that location and Genki recognizes that he's returning to Mt. Kairus, before suddenly remembering about the badly injured Pixie below them. Big Blue holds her as the Searchers gather around her, worried sick about her. Holly proposes taking her to Jill's village, and they meet him there. When asked if he hadn't left, he says that he told everyone else to go without him. After a quick look at Pixie, he can immediately tell that her condition is serious, and asks for her to be taken to his house quickly.
Elsewhere, Moo continues wreaking havoc with his improved breath when his floating castle comes flying in his direction. A Weed comes out to greet him cheerfully, praising him and their army of baddies, unaware that he has lost control of himself. Moo unexpectedly fires a full-force beam at him, disintegrating the loyal minion and damaging the castle. A Weed and Jell that were piloting one of the iron birds accompanying it are shocked seeing this reaction from their master. Now seeing that Moo is no longer who they once knew, they order all cannons to fire at the mad baddie after he fires once more at his castle, making it fall to the ground. The cannons do nothing to him but his own attacks are capable of destroying a ship in a single shot. When Weed tries to retreat, recognizing that they don't stand a chance, Moo creates a dark hatred-filled orb that he launches at the ship, impacting the ground after expanding to a massive size. After the explosion, an enormous, fuming crater is left below him. Moo admires his powers, screaming loudly for all to hear.
The evil soul's shout can be heard from Jill's village. Pixie, lying in a bed, covered by pink sheets, her eyes closed in pain, is the center of everyone's concern. Outside, Falcon tells the Searchers that he and his Pirates will go to Mt. Kairus. Hare says that the Final Gate there might be necessary to resurrect the Phoenix and Tiger asks if they'll be able to do this. Falcon simply assures him that they're pirates (bandits, in Japanese) before taking off. Back inside, Jill fears for Pixie's future, saying that they might lose her at this rate. Big Blue is visibly the most worried about her. He closes his eyes reflectively for a second, asking if there's a shrine nearby. Jill confirms this, and Big Blue asks to be taken there, Genki seemingly understanding without further ado what he plans to do.
Holly, Genki, Suezo, Mocchi and Golem try to stop him as he goes upstairs into the shrine. Tiger and Hare come running their way, asking what's happening, and Holly explains that Big Blue intends to fuse with Pixie to save her. Hare can't believe it, warning him that he'd lose his identity. Suezo tells him that this would be similar to dying, but Big Blue denies that, saying that he'll continue living within her as a new being, and that that's enough for him. Later, at the shrine, Big Blue stands in the center of the fusing area, the Searchers surrounding him. Jill, from a few meters away, warns him that chances are that he'll disappear if he fuses and asks if he's totally sure about it. Genki emphasizes the question, through gritted teeth, as his eyes start watering. He tries to hide it, scrubbing his eyes, and Big Blue asks if they're crying for him. Suezo, equally distressed, confirms this; Tiger and Hare comment on this as well, saying that he's a special friend of theirs; Golem tells him that he'll lose him and that it makes him sad. Big Blue smiles sadly as he watches everyone crying, before a tear falls from his left eye. Noticing this, he places a hand on his cheek, surprised at his own reaction, saying that he thought he had forgotten how to cry. He looks at an agonizing Pixie one last time, before telling Jill to go on with his plan.
The shrine is prepared, the torches in the columns surrounding him lighting up, as the Searchers stand a few meters away, behind the control panel. A rainbow light emerges from below the two monsters as their friends watch with sadness Big Blue assures them that he'll never forget them and Holly and Genki cry while forcing themselves to push the button that will help the Pixie and Big Blue merge into one. Big Blue speaks one last time, thanking the Searchers for respecting his wishes, before a bright light surrounds him, completing the fusion with a small explosion.
When the smoke clouds dissipate, a light-filled being is seen emerging, extending feathered wings. When she's seen more clearly, Suezo calls her Granity, as she's a Pixie with green hair, a few rocks on her head, resembling a tiara, a stone bikini and a short tail. She opens her eyes and scans everyone in the room, not remembering why they are all there, confused at her own appearance. She makes a horrible realization saying that this change would only be possible if she had fused. Holly and Genki slouch with immense emotional pain, knowing the dark truth.
Granity desperately asks for Big Blue, but Jill tells her that her guess was accurate. Holly confesses that he fused with her to save her life and she becomes outraged, calling him a fool and asking why he threw his life away like that. The Searchers correct her, saying that he lives inside her and that it was his will. Genki even mentions that he thanked them before fusing, making her start crying, saddened that her most loyal companion would sacrifice himself to save her. Her tears fall down her chest and make her baddie crest disappear upon coming into contact with it, surprising her. Jill comforts her by saying that two lives fused to take a new form, catching Holly's attention as she mentally remembers his previous words about the Phoenix's soul potentially being reborn as a monster without their knowledge. Her eyes open wide as she wonders, assuming that Jill is correct, if the Phoenix could be resurrected even though his soul is already fused with another monster. She watches Genki as he tells Jill to flee, detailing that they'll be waiting there with the Phoenix until Falcon returns.
The episode ends with a few seconds of Moo roaring loudly as he approaches Mt. Kairus.

Trivia[]
In the English and Latin American Spanish versions:
- When Moo fires at the Searchers after they attempt a joined attack, the scene where his shot explodes in the snow was deleted. Funnily enough, the next time this happens after he shocks Genki, it doesn't get deleted.
- When Pixie tells Genki about their friends who were fighting Moo's armies elsewhere, most of that scene was left speechless.
- A few seconds of Moo's body on fire after being hit by the combined forces fo the Searchers and the pirate Dragons were deleted.
- The couple of seconds after Moo emerges unharmed from the dust cloud and disintegrates some dragons with his fire breath were deleted. When he does it a second time before they can attack him again, it is also deleted.
- The scene where Moo slashes Pixie's wings off was removed, though she's seen free falling without them.
- Moo's internal struggle against Holly's father is shortened slightly, removing the few seconds of the evil soul extending like black snakes in the dark, around the human.
