Brothers in the Greatest 4 is the eighteenth episode of Season 3 and the sixty-sixth overall episode of the Monster Rancher anime series. It aired in Japan on August 5, 2001.
Synopsis[]

Full Recap[]
Poison and MumMew are heard arguing once again, with the Pixie asking her what she's even doing to retrieve the Lost Disc, as she complains about her screams. Gobi, standing next to them with his palms up, tries to stop the fight but only attracts Poison's angry attention at him, causing her to call him "big, but absolutely useless", mocking him. Gobi, unhappy with these comments, starts sweating nervously and she keeps slandering him, asking if all he's good at is running around confused. Hearing this, Gobi gets on his knees, covers his face and starts sobbing loudly. MumMew feels upset about her doing this to her friend and seems to chant mockingly at her (in the Japanese version). A loud, demanding voice is heard interrupting this scene, telling them to be quiet, before the doors guarding General Durahan. Gobi and MumMew rush to kneel in front of him with the utmost respect, and Poison quickly flies to his side, hugging his helmet, flapping her wings excitedly and asking which warrior from his collection he'll pick this time. He laughs and says he won't need any of them, surprising her. Then, he explains that his faithful Weed had already left to gain the allegiance of a strong monster.
The Searchers finally find themselves at the entrance of Colart for their next tournament. Holly comments on this being their second time there, and Mocchi recalls their previous participation in the Rookie Cup. They all run to register and discover that the eligible monsters this time are Weed, Ape, Evil Hare, Tiger and Hopper. Genki rejoices seeing that there's one of them who'll be able to fight alongside Mocchi this time, and he also seems happy to be able to participate in a fight again. Hare interrupts them, saying that he's among the eligible breeds, and taunts Tiger, saying that surely Genki would rather see his own graceful moves over Tiger's "crude savagery", quickly angering his friendly rival, who threatens to eat him. Holly tries to stop them from actually fighting each other before Suezo and Golem comment that Tiger would be more fitting than him to fight this time, making Tiger feel proud and mighty.
Hare laughs and reveals that he has no intention of entering the tournament and that he's only teasing Tiger. He then threatens to use his newly relearned Blizzard attack on the Hare, surprising everyone. Genki asks if he had already relearned his old attacks and Tiger starts building up energy, becoming surrounded by a pink aura. In the end, he chases after Hare without using a single attack, since he was just bluffing, disappointing everyone, including the old man at the inscription table and his assistant. Golem still tries to stop them from getting into a real fight where they could get hurt. The man taking care of registers asks Genki if they're ready, because there are others in line waiting for their turn. Genki promptly apologizes for the delay and he and Mocchi hand him his trainer card and Mocchi's participant one, respectively, as the kid introduces his fighting monsters as Mocchi and Tiger, saying that he'll give advice to both during their battles, all while Tiger and Hare continue running in circles in the back. The man quickly appoints them for the tournament on the next day.
Later that day, at sunset, Tiger runs away from the rest, saying that he'll continue training until the tournament, calling for them to follow him. The Searchers all run far behind him, doing as he says. Tiger doesn't wait for them, even when they ask him to stop, and keeps running until he climbs on a tall rock to stare into the sky dramatically.
In the horizon, a pair of silhouettes become clearer as they approach that area, one of them looking like a human carrying something on their back, and the other, like a quadrupedal monster. Tiger gasps at this and focuses on them, quickly realizing that the monster is none other than his brother, Graywolf. His eyes become wide open and glassy at this sight, and he rushes back down to the ground so he can get closer to him. Graywolf, who wasn't expecting to find him there, finally notices that Tiger is just a few meters away from him, and he can't believe his eyes, asking the monster in front of him if he's truly his big brother.
Both of them get incredibly excited, happy and emotional to find themselves together again, and they run to meet each other. Tiger is marvelled to discover that his brother had resurrected, and Graywolf comments that he heard he had disappeared after becoming the Phoenix. The older brother explains that he became a Disc Stone but was brought back recently, the younger brother loving these news. The human walking with him calls Graywolf's name before stepping closer and Tiger asks if she's the one who revived him. He confirms it, introducing her as Nina, and the monster on her back as Hopper. When she reaches them, she asks if this is the brother he always talks about and he answers positively. She winks playfully, asking if he's happy to have found him again. The Searchers, exhausted from running so much, finally get close to where Tiger is, and, from a distance, recognize Graywolf with him, wondering if it's truly him. They all feel happy to see him back, and Genki starts calling for the Tiger brothers to notice them there.
At night, all together around a bonfire enjoy a long conversation to catch up. Graywolf, having just learned that Moo's evil soul and baddies are still around, now understands how Weed met him earlier. He mentions that he tried to recruit him, as everyone listens attentively, and when Tiger asks in disbelief what his reaction was, Graywolf smirks while recalling and revealing that he used his Thunderbolt on him as an answer. Weed couldn't do anything to him and was forced to flee, swearing not to ever forget what he had done. Tiger feels proud about him and his decision, openly letting him know, and everyone feels relieved to hear that as well. Then, the older brother asks how he met Nina, and she explains through a flashback.
Nina recalls going up Snowy Mountain with Hopper to train during a heavy blizzard. On one of his attempts at using his Lightning attack, the target he picked (Graywolf's Lost Disc, completely covered in snow), reacted strangely to this shock, making it slightly bounce in random directions and allowing a disc-shaped silhouette to be seen below. The light produced was so bright that both trainer and monster had to cover their eyes for a few seconds, while it lasted. Nina then walked towards it and saw that a portion of the Disc Stone had been revealed.
Like anyone else would have done, she took that disc to a shrine to generate a monster, bringing the Tiger back. She immediately acknowledged his name upon seeing him, and overly-excited joy led her to run straight at him and surprise the monster with a hug so intense that he fell off, not expecting this, nor being used to such displays of affection, all while effusively expressing how happy she was about this. Hopper rushed to meet both on the floor and nuzzled his new companion. All this contact made Graywolf feel very uncomfortable, not knowing what to do.
Graywolf commented that all the humans who had ever found him, had just abandoned him afterwards, so he was unable to love them.
Finally standing and with a respectable distance between each other, Nina introduced herself and Hopper, telling the Tiger that from that day on, they'd always be together, no matter what. Graywolf kept looking away, aloofly ignoring her before she approached and started shaking his head from side to side with one hand, asking why he's so nervous and calling him weird, right before Hopper joined them to pull from the corner of his mouth to force a smile. Nina stood up, laughing at this, before Graywolf growled at her, making her fall off her feet. Seeing her now sitting to be at eye level with him, Graywolf closed his eyes and announced that he'd stay with her for a while. She taunted him, using his own words, before scooting closer and forcing a smile on his face again, saying that they'll be together forever, not "for a while".
Graywolf told everyone that, at that moment, he decided to trust humans, or at least Nina. Ruining the moment, Nina repeated the same gesture as in the flashback, shaking his head with one hand at the top of his skull, taunting him for always acting so serious. Graywolf shook her hand off, yelling that he had already told her not to do that. The Searchers found all this amusing and adorable, and Tiger spoke directly to Nina, thanking her for taking care of him. She said she thanked him, in turn, because meeting Graywolf was what motivated her to enter the Legend Cup, mentioning that she had always been fascinated by it. This knocked the air out of everyone's lungs, before Nina innocently asked why they were so shocked. Graywolf immediately understood and desperately turned to Tiger to ask that he denied being interested in it as well. The older brother had to answer affirmatively, creating a very tense and awkward atmosphere around that bonfire.
Later that night, after the fire was off and everyone was sound asleep, Graywolf had a dream about the past.
He and his brother as young pups are facing a colossal Stone Dragon in the middle of a snowstorm. Tiger, standing between the other two, asks his brother if that was the guy who stole his meat. When he says yes, Tiger jumps straight at him, only to be met with the claws on his huge hand, a splat of blood appearing on screen. Tiger lands on his feet and tries to attack again, but he's no match for the Dragon, who elbows him effortlessly. Later, after the storm has stopped, the scene features a sobbing Graywolf standing next to Tiger, who has bruises all over his body and struggles to stand back up. Despite that, he tells his younger brother to stop crying, and angrily promises to beat him next time. Graywolf agrees, but still feels bad about seeing his brother so beaten up.
Graywolf opens his eyes and gets up, staring away and thinking of his brother, who happens to be awake as well. Lying at the top of a high rock, Tiger stares at the moon, and his brother joins him. Without turning to face him, Tiger asks if he can't sleep, and he replies that it's just like him, making him grin. The eldest brother comments that it's been a long time since they last looked at the moon together, and Graywolf agrees, visibly concerned. Tiger looks at him, asking what's wrong, and Graywolf opens up his heart. He doesn't know what to do about the tournament, because he wants to win for Nina, but he doesn't want to fight him. He explains that, for the first time in his life, he knows what kindness is, thanks to Nina. Quickly realizing that what he said could offend him, he nervously adds that he did feel kindness when living with his brother. Tiger agrees, saying that ever since he started living with the Searchers, he started feeling kindness, even more than between the two of them. Hearing this puts ice on Graywolf's veins, shocking him to the extreme. Tiger stands up, looking into the moon, and reaffirms his statement, saying that they're brothers in name, not blood, frustrating and angering his brother immensely as he asks how he can say such a thing. Tiger closes his eyes and tells him that they were just thrown away in the same box, but Graywolf refuses to believe that. When he calls Tiger "brother" again, he tells him to stop that. The older monster says that they've already started going their own separate ways and that, when their paths cross, Graywolf will become his enemy. Graywolf listens to everything attentively, but in disbelief. Once his speech is over, Tiger swiftly runs away from there, leaving his now ex-brother behind.
The next morning, everyone's already at the stadium and the chairman's voice echoes in the air thanks to his handy microphone. His introduction is pretty similar to how it is in the games before some tournaments, speaking of the weather first ("Clouds are beginning to hang over Colart Stadium") and then telling everyone that this tournament, the Greatest Four, is one of the four top events, alongside the M-1 Grand Prix, Winner's Cup and World Monsters Cup, and the final step before the Legend Cup. A gigantic screen shows the brackets for these fights, with pictures of each participant, before switching to a different animation to explain that the battles will be 2-on-2, with the chance of a third round in case of a tie. Genki, Mocchi and Tiger are seen walking through the corridors of the stadium, entering the arena, and so is Nina's group, going in the opposite direction. Time seems to freeze for a moment when the brothers pass by each other, completely ignoring everyone else. Genki's team finally reaches their destination and the rest of the Searchers are shown cheering for them from the bleachers.
Mocchi's the first one to fight, and he wins easily against a Blue Hare when his Cherry Blossom Blizzard catches him and forces him out of the ring. Then, Tiger is seen electrocuting an Ape with his Lightning attack, winning as well. Next up, Hopper is shown slashing an Evil Hare's face and Graywolf defeating a monster that looks a lot like a Rock Ape in a similar fashion as his brother. The final battles, as expected, align in a way that the brothers end up becoming rivals for real. The commentator introduces both teams with Mocchi and Graywolf as their respective captains, as they stand on opposite ends of the arena, each of them looking determined to win.
Mocchi and Hopper get to fight first. When the referee tells them to start, they both pick a short-range approach, boxing each other but failing to land a hit. Nina tells Hopper to use his Flicker, and he jumps back to increase the distance between them before extending an arm to punch Mocchi from afar. This time he succeeds, punching him repeatedly with both fists and Genki calls his name to try and make him react. Nina smiles confidently and yells at Hopper to use Phantom Claw. His retractable claws come out, and he slashes at the air, a shadow of his paw with sharp claws flying in Mocchi's direction. Mocchi looks terrified of this attack, and only when Genki tells him to use an attack (Mocchi Roll) does he move away, just in time to avoid getting hit. He rolls at Hopper, but Nina advises him to Jump Blow him, and he does so by hopping up, doing a 1080 spin in the air and falling with an extended arm to slap Mocchi's cheek, dismissing his rolling technique. Nina looks even more excited, believing that this is their chance to win, but Genki shouts at Mocchi to use Mocchi Cannon. Finally, Mocchi manages to hit Hopper, with his Cannon being impossible to dodge, but he hasn't won yet. Both trainers tell their monsters what attack to use next to end this fight. Mocchi fires his Cherry Blossom Blizzard at Hopper, and, despite being told to do a "Hopper Roll", he charges an attack similarly to his Phantom Claw (without the shadows and the claws, but firing some kind of yellow energy lines in the wind). Both attacks land and both monsters end up being blown away and out of the ring, tying. All spectators, including the commentator, are surprised by this end result. The trainers rush to hold their monsters, clearly worried about their wellbeing.
The commentator then excitedly announces that the result of this tournament lies in the result of the next fight. Tiger and Graywolf enter the ring, without saying a word and stare angrily at each other. Holly acknowledges with high empathy that this will be a very hard fight for Tiger, personally, but Hare mentions that he must win for them. Right as the battle's about to start, dark clouds rush to cover the blue sky and it starts raining. Everyone at the colosseum is equally surprised and worried about getting wet, but the referee signals at them to begin. The brothers stare into each other's eyes, immobile and silently, before flashbacks invade Graywolf's mind.
One time when he was a puppy, he ran through the snow, calling desperately for Tiger. Upon reaching him, Graywolf stopped in the spot and began sobbing when Tiger asked what had happened. Only after he told him to stop crying, the younger brother revealed that stray monsters had stolen his meat.
Tiger, in his mind, notes that Graywolf had matured a lot, both physically and mentally.
The memory's resumed, showing that, after retrieving the stolen meat, Tiger reclaimed it as his, telling Graywolf to fight him for it if he wanted it. The puppy cried that he couldn't do that to him, and Tiger yelled at him to stop acting like a baby, because he had to get stronger to survive on his own, making him cry more.
Graywolf acknowledges how Tiger always scolded him, forcing him to become stronger, but then the thought of his brother calling him his enemy the night before makes him close his eyes in pain and grind his teeth, before he finally launches himself at Tiger to fight. The brothers jump at each other, extending their clawed paws to slash the sides of each other's necks. Upon landing, Ice Bombs shot simultaneously meet halfway towards the other, creating an ice structure in the middle that quickly blows up in a million small bits of ice. The brothers start running together on the arena, occasionally crossing each other's paths, before firing Blizzard attacks that share the same fate as their Ice Bombs. They race each other again before attempting to bite the other's throat in the air. Tiger gets the upperhand when he shoots an Ice Bomb that catches Graywolf off-guard, damaging him and leaving him vulnerable to extra attacks. Tiger charges at him, headbutting his chest and making Nina worry. Genki tells Tiger to use his Lightning on him, but as he's about to do it, he sees Graywolf as the young puppy he used to be, calling him "big brother" again, and loses his chance. Graywolf does make good use of this opening, though, and charges at Tiger, headbutting him, scratching him, biting the side of his neck and landing a Lightning on him, which sends Tiger flying away. He falls, hitting his back, and the Searchers worry about him. Golem is confident in him being stronger than what they just saw, and Hare agrees, cheering on him.
The rain gets more abundant and the attendees find shelter from it inside the halls of the colosseum. Genki and Mocchi slap the floor repeatedly, telling Tiger to get up so he isn't declared knocked-out. He stands up laboriously and his brother approaches him slowly. Once he's close enough, he asks Tiger if he actually meant what he had told him the night before, about them not being brothers anymore. Breaking his heart, Tiger confirms this, adding that they're enemies. Graywolf grunts, upset at his words. Nina advises him to finish Tiger off with his next attack and Genki asks him what's wrong with his Lightning. Tiger answers that he can't concentrate as usual and Mocchi's shocked to think that he can't use his best move. Genki, filled with fear, tells him that that attack is his only hope to win.
The referee, standing between both fighters, looks up, noticing that it's pouring, and asks them if they want to postpone their battle for later. Tiger quickly rejects that, and the brothers ready themselves to resume their fight. Standing in the shadows, Mecha-Weed seems content to have found Graywolf again. He's planning on getting his revenge on him and stealing the Disc Stone afterwards. Tiger tells his brother to come at him already, but as they're about to do anything, they hear Weed using his Seed Machine Gun and firing specifically at Graywolf. Frozen in place as the single target of this attack, he's only saved when Tiger stands between the attack and him and miraculously uses his Lightning to neutralize these flying seeds. The referee asks the obscured monster who they are, and Weed's baddie crest becomes visible, surprising Genki. Everyone else looks with shock at this monster and Hare wonders how he got there. Weed tries to use the same technique again, but he's interrupted by a Mocchi Cannon that sends him flying towards a wall, making a hole in it. Weed then flees but not before swearing to get revenge someday. After he's gone, the referee approaches the Tigers again, recognizing that that was a most unfortunate interruption and suggests they take a break. Tiger replies to him saying that they don't mind and that they'll keep fighting, but Graywolf questions his actions. He asks why he didn't use his Lightning on him earlier, because he was cornered and that would have given him a huge advantage. When Tiger remains silent, Graywolf continues asking, growing more desperate for answers, asking as well if he didn't do it because he felt sorry for him. Tiger finally reacts, closing his eyes and saying that he's always believed that emotions should be kept out of fights, but he wasn't following his own advice right now. Graywolf's eyes open wide, and he asks if that was the reason for the things he had said at night about them not being brothers, before his irises get glassy. Tiger states that fights are contests of guts and skill, but Graywolf's emotions were unstable. The younger Tiger understands this as his brother only seeking to protect him, not meaning any of those cruel things he had said.
The clouds dissipate when the brothers open up to each other, and the public returns to the bleachers, eager to see how the tournament will end. The Tigers walk away from the center of the arena, towards their trainers and face each other one last time. Graywolf warns his opponent that he'll put everything he's got into his next attack, asking him to do the same, and Tiger agrees. The two smile confidently now and Genki (copied by Nina, shortly afterwards) tells him to use his maximum guts. A pink energy aura surrounds both fighters as they raise their guts before the final blow.
They charge at each other, not fretting this time, and their horns clash with each other. Both Tiger and Graywolf fall over the arena, seemingly knocked-out. The trainers call for their monsters to get up, and the younger brother succeeds more quickly. He approaches his brother slowly, laboriously, as he struggles to get back up. Just as he seemed to be the winner, having stood up faster and being able to walk, Graywolf suffers delayed damage and his eyes go white as he collapses on the hard floor. With Tiger as the last monster standing, the tournament comes to an end. The referee declares Graywolf's KO and Tiger, the winner..
The audience goes wild with excitement, and the Searchers are the ones most happy about this result. Nina and Hopper, both sad and with glassy eyes, kneel next to Graywolf to tend his wounds. Tiger joins them, asking if he's okay, and Graywolf opens his eyes in clear pain, to tell him that he is. Genki and Mocchi get closer to check on him, but the Tiger apologizes to Nina. She, at the verge of tears, lets him know that it's okay, that he had a great fight although he lost. She tells him that he fought very well, thanks him for his efforts and hugs him with Hopper, making Graywolf smile with pure bliss. Genki, Mocchi and Tiger receive the winner's card that will allow them to enter the Legend Cup with a sum of money as prizes for winning this tournament.
At sunset, the Searchers say goodbye to Graywolf's new group. Genki asks Nina what are their plans now, and she explains that they'll keep practising for the next Greatest Four; Holly wishes them good luck with that. Graywolf speaks directly to his brother, telling him to take care, and Tiger replies with a short "you too" before turning around and walking away from there. Genki tells him to wait for them and runs after him. The rest of the Searchers bid them farewell in their own ways and so does Nina. Graywolf stands silently, looking only at his brother. Now a few extra meters away, Genki asks Tiger if he's so sure about leaving so soon, since they won't get to see each other for quite a while now. Tiger confidently replies that he can see Graywolf anytime, because no matter how far apart they are, he can always feel him, for they are brothers. Mocchi expresses his jealousy about this brotherhood, but when Suezo offers to be his brother, he rejects this, angering him. After a quick laugh, Genki encourages the others to keep going and as soon as he's done, Tiger decides to go on ahead, though Genki quickly catches up with him, playfully hugging him as they walk.

Trivia[]
- The cards showing eligible monsters for this tournament don't all show pure monsters, a couple of them feature mixed breeds (namely, Weed, a Plant/Naga, and Evil Hare, Hare/Monol), yet characters interpret them simply as the main breed of each monster (Hopper, Tiger, Hare, Ape, Plant), evidenced by Hare saying that he could also participate, despite not seeing a pure "Hare" card.
- The way Jump Blow looks on this episode is vastly different from how it is in the games. In Monster Rancher 2, to use Jump Blow, Hopper approaches his target, crouches and seems to jump up like a spring, with his fist extended to uppercut the other monster, whereas Nina's Hopper jumped up high, rolled a few times in the air, before landing a hit on Mocchi's face.
- A majority of Tiger and Graywolf's fight was recycled from the one they had on episode 27. The same animation cells were used with different backgrounds, leaving some very apparent clues of this (including the way their paws seem to move the snow around them when they ran paralel to each other, despite the absence of snow in this episode).
- A strange sound that can only be compared to the cartoonish crying of a baby can be heard just as Mocchi and Genki approach Graywolf after he loses against Tiger.
- Tiger's speech about he and Graywolf not being real brothers might raise some questions about whether monsters can be actually related or not, since they all seem to span from Mystery Discs and there are no mentions of monsters being parents to others throughout the series.
In the English and Latin American Spanish dubs:
- Graywolf's memory of his Lightning attack on Weed when he tried to recruit him was shortened to a fraction (one third) of the time it lasted for in the original version.
- The scene where Nina and Hopper nuzzle Graywolf on the floor after tackling him was removed.
- Graywolf mentions being unlocked by other humans before Nina but being abandoned shortly afterwards. This doesn't make sense because he would have remained alive if he had been unlocked one first time; saying that several humans took his disc to the shrine implies that he also died and became a Mystery Disc just as many times in the short time period between his defeat and this episode (about a year). This is very unlikely because he should have either been killed each time by someone else or by the weather, despite being in a uninhabited mountain and having spent his entire life in snowy places (like the one where he fought Tiger).
- In the original Japanese version he only mentions that all the humans who'd found [him] had abandoned [him], which could be more accurate, because, according to Tiger, they were both left in a box as puppies, so, the only humans he ever met did indeed abandon him.
- The moment of awkward silence after finding out that both Tiger and Graywolf will participate of the tournament the next morning is a few seconds shorter, probably to better accomodate the "rap" segment that follows it. Also, the short shot of the bonfire being out (before the camera pans through the sleeping Searchers) was removed.
- Graywolf's dream of the past was censored: Tiger being slapped by the Stone Dragon and the subsequent scene with him looking all bruised and telling his brother to stop crying because he'll win next time were deleted.
- Tiger assures he didn't feel any kindness at all towards Graywolf when they were young, but in the original version he only says that it's lesser than what he feels with the Searchers.
- The scene where Tiger and Graywolf walk past each other inside the colosseum before the tournament starts originally included an extra second of a still shot with them being next to each other before their walking sequence was resumed, but, for some reason, this was removed.
- Any trace of the fights that took place before the final match in the original version was completely erased; in these versions, the tournament consists only of Genki and Nina's teams fighting each other.
- The anticipating shots of Mocchi vs Hopper and Tiger vs Graywolf shown after both teams are introduced to the audience were removed.
- Mocchi's fight was modified greatly: Hopper's flicker was removed, Mocchi roll was deleted and replaced with Mocchi cannon and Hopper never used his jump blow.
- Hopper and Mocchi falling outside the ring, both knocked out, was deleted.
- The faraway camera pan after the referee declares this match a tie was shown right after both monsters hit each other at the same time, being blown out of the ring, instead of being seen a few seconds later like it is in the original.
- The next battle was heavily censored, just like Graywolf and Tiger's last fight on episode 27:
- The scene revealing red scars on the sides of Tiger and Graywolf's bodies after they scratch each other in the air was deleted.
- Graywolf's headbut and him biting Tiger's neck before firing his Lightning were removed.
- The Ice Bomb attack that allowed an opening so Tiger could get the upperhand, just like his subsequent headbutt to his brother's chest, were censored.
- Tiger landing on the floor after receiving his brother's Lightning was removed.
- The shot showing the moment Tiger and Graywolf's simultaneous headbutts landed was deleted.
- The followup scene where their heads are still held against each other, before they fall over their backs, was censored also.
- Both trainers are shown worried about their monsters after they fall, before Graywolf manages to stand back up; this scene lacks a camera pan showing both Tiger monsters lying down on the ring.
- The whole split-screen sequence of Tiger struggling to stand up as Graywolf walks towards him was removed, leaving only a second of Tiger standing up in pain after his brother gets to be in front of him.
- Graywolf's eyes turning grey before he falls down unconscious was omitted.
- A shot of Tiger looking at Nina and Graywolf with fondness before receiving the tournament prize was deleted.
- After the Searchers bid farewell to Nina's group, there are a few seconds of Tiger's behind as he walks away and Graywolf stares at him that were removed.
