Monster Rancher Wiki

Garp first appeared as a statue in Monster Rancher 2, found in the ParePare Jungle.

A massive tortoise monster that has a trunk like an elephant, giving rise to the idea that it may be an early ancestor of the Mamou. As far as we know, there is only one Garp still living in Pangaea, and it is the guardian of the Promiass Ruins (sometimes called "The Wise Turtle of Promiass" or "The Living Fossil"). He is also one of the few monsters in the game series that can speak the human language. Because it has lived there for thousands of years, it has actually merged with the ruins, freely sharing its anima with the energy of the ancient burial grounds.

During the search for answers about some disturbing murals seen on the walls in the ruins in Monster Rancher 4, Mockruji suggests that you check the lower levels and when you do, you realize that four of the columns actually make up the legs of Garp. Because he is partially made of stone and connected (literally!) with ancient relics, he may be related to Disk.

When you first approach him at the bottom of Promiass Ruins, Garp informs Phayne that the disturbance is being caused by the use of the black arts, particularly from the Tome of the Black Arts. He also tells Rio that she is indeed the princess from the past whom the Phoenix had sealed in a disc for thousands of years. However, before he reveals this information, Phayne has to battle him to determine if he and Rio can handle the truth about the Dark Age and Rio's true nature. When Phayne and his monsters defeat Garp, he gladly tells them the vital information regarding the events up until this point, warning them that the black arts will revive an ancient evil very soon.

In the Japanese version (Monster Farm 4), it has a smooth black shell and is named Genbu.

Etymology[]

Genbu is the Japanese name for the Chinese deity of the north, the Template:Ns. It is often depicted as a turtle intertwined with a snake. The elephant trunk is likely a reference to the Baku, a dream-eating tapir from Japanese mythology.
