This is about the anime character. For the monster itself, see Gray Wolf.
Gray Wolf (Silver Rygar in the Japanese version) is Tiger's younger brother in the anime series. He was captured by Moo, brainwashed and turned into one of his Big Bad Four, entrusted with controlling the center of the Northern Continent from his ice castle. Gray Wolf is the third of the chief villains that the Searchers defeat.
Season 1[]
Tiger brothers when they were little.
Gray Wolf shows up for the first time during a flashback on episode 5. After Genki helps Tiger recover from the wounds he had sustained from a raid by the dino troops, he decides to trust him enough to tell him the story of how he lost his brother to Master Moo himself.
They had been abandoned in a wooden box and left to float in a turbulent river, but the brothers managed to live normal lives in the wild, hunting for their food, defeating other predators and eventually leading a pack of Tigers (Datons and Datonares). That was until Moo showed up in their freezing homeland with Worm and Jell troops and proceeded to defeat them all but the two brothers. While Tiger got slapped into the ground and left unconscious, Gray Wolf, who had jumped to bite Moo's shoulder, received an electric shock that had him pass out and got kidnapped, not to ever see his brother again.
His first personal appearance is on episode 7, during a meeting between Moo and the Big Bad Four. He recommends Pixie to do something about the Searchers, as they oppose their cause, though he doesn't believe that they represent much of a threat.
Gray Wolf is seen on episode 22 assaulting a village with his Cabalos and burning it to the ground, later complaining that he's yet to find someone who's a worthy opponent for him. When a Cabalos comes running to tell him about Gali's defeat, he doesn't seem concerned about his comrade's downfall, but he looks surprised that the Searchers could manage such a feat. Discovering that they're going through the forest where Black Worms reside, he yells into the wind for them to hear that they must go after the rebels, howling together with his troops. Then, after believing for a long time that his brother was dead, Tiger learns from a Black Worm that Gray Wolf is not only still alive but also the one who sent the troops after him and the others.
Season 2[]
On Episode 27, Gray Wolf sends a Cabalos to invite Tiger to a one-on-one duel that will put an end to their rivalry and prove who's the strongest brother. The catch is that he must go alone, without his friends, and although the others believe it to be a trap, Tiger accepts his terms and leaves with the Cabalos. When the two finally meet, they see each other face to face for the first time in a while and a conversation ensues, one in which Gray Wolf reveals that he lived all this time convinced that he had cowardly abandoned him to save himself from Moo, followed by Tiger's insistent denial. Believing Moo's lies over his own brother's words, Gray Wolf gets mad at him but still offers Tiger a chance to join his side before getting into battle. When his brother refuses, the baddie's true plans are revealed as he sends the Cabalos to fight him instead. The Searchers reach the top of the snowy mountain and help get those minions out of the way so the brothers can get a fair fight. They seem evenly matched in techniques, so proposes using only their claws. But when Tiger attacks, Gray Wolf whips him with his tail, momentarily blinding him. Then, he takes advantage of his brother's impairment and beats him up repeatedly, until Genki comes running to stand between the teo. When he doesnt move away, Gray Wolf charges at him, fully intending to strike the boy, but Tiger used his remaining senses to feel his brother's steps and anticipates his position to counter his attack. Tiger catches Gray Wolf by surprise by stabbing his baddie crest, breaking it into pieces. Before he dies, Gray Wolf comes back to his senses, his eyes return to their normal look (with white sclerae) and says goodbye to his brother, wishing they could go back to being pups. He then becomes a Lost Disc, and Tiger, with his eyes still closed from the hit of his tail, mourns his loss with a howl.
Season 3[]
Gray Wolf is seen once more heading towards Colart with his new trainer, Nina, and her partner, Hopper. When he and Tiger see each other from afar, they run for an emotional reunion of long-lost brothers. They're both glad to see the other alive and well (Gray Wolf had heard of Tiger becoming a Mystery Disc after being part of the Phoenix). Later that day, Nina tells the Searchers how she found his Mystery Disc one day when she and Hopper were training in the snowy mountain and a Lightning from her monster struck the pile of snow he was covered with, earning a reaction from his Disc. Soon after being released by her at the nearest shrine, she immediately got fond of him and ran to hug and nuzzle him, much to Gray Wolf's disgust, due to having nothing but bad experiences with humans in the past. He decided to trust her and stay with her for a while, but she assured him that they'd be together forever.
Finding out that Tiger and his group were participating in the Greatest 4 just like him and Nina ruined his night. He was so affected that a dream in which he remembered how his brother stood up for him in front of a huge Stone Dragon who had stolen his food when they were young and weak made him wake up. Afterwards, a conversation about his mixed feelings related to the tournament (wanting to win for Nina vs. not wanting to fight Tiger if they were rivals), led to the older brother acting tough and pretending that he didn't care about him anymore, going as far as refusing to acknowledge him as his brother and claiming that he'd be nothing but an obstacle in his way if they were to fight. These cruel statements severely affected Gray Wolf, since he wasn't expecting that treatment when they finally met each other.
The next day, on the tournament, Gray Wolf's team beat every other team and reached the finals, just like Tiger and his team. Just as they feared, they became rivals with a common, mutually exclusive goal: winning this tournament to have a chance for the Legend Cup. After Mocchi and Hopper's simultaneous knockout accident, the result of the tournament depended entirely on them. They were pretty much evenly-matched during their fight, until Tiger managed to get the upper hand, though he couldn't give Gray Wolf the coup de grâce due to seeing him as a pup for an instant. Gray Wolf took that chance to attack and got Tiger against the ropes, and asked him if he really meant all that he had told him the night before, to which he insisted, further breaking his brother's heart. Shortly afterwards, Weed showed up, seeking revenge on Gray Wolf, but Tiger surprised everyone by blocking his Seed machine gun attack with a Lightning before Mocchi sent Weed flying away, forcing him to retreat. Discovering that his brother had actually been withholding his Lightning attack for his fight, forced Tiger to admit that his cold and distant attitude towards him since realizing that they'd end up fighting each other had only been an attempt at keeping their brotherly love out of this fight, for he believed that feelings had no place in battles and Gray Wolf was letting his emotions become unstable. Gray Wolf nearly cried when finding this out, realizing that his brother had only been trying to help him. Both Tigers decided to leave those things aside and strike each other one last time to determine the winner of this tournament. After recharging their guts, both charged to headbutt each other, their horns clashing and both getting hurt in the process. Gray Wolf stood back up more quickly, but shortly after Tiger got up, his body gave in and fell down, letting the older brother reclaim victory. After losing the fight, he had to be comforted by his trainer while Genki's team stood on the winner's podium.
While parting ways with the Searchers, Gray Wolf told his brother to take care on his journey, before he turned around and left. As he got further and further away from him, Gray Wolf just stared at him.
Appearance[]
His fur is white and pale gray in contrast to his game counterpart, whose fur is in shades of gray. He initially has a baddie crest on the center of his chest, due to Master Moo making him a baddie, until Tiger stabs him with his horns, breaking it into pieces (and causing his death). After his disc is unlocked by Nina, he doesn't have the insignia anymore. His eyes, when he was a baddie, were also quite different: he had ice-blue sclerae and small, black pupils; whereas when lacking the baddie crest (both before being corrupted and after being revived), his eyes were brighter and similar to Tiger's, except that his sclerae were white and he had blue irises around his black pupils.
Personality[]
When he was a pup, Gray Wolf was highly dependent on his brother's protection. They had a very close bond from the start and Gray Wolf developed an immense respect for Tiger, always recognizing him as the strongest of the two and believing that he didn't stand a chance against him in combat. Any time Tiger scolded him for acting cowardly, Gray Wolf got sad, seeing that he couldn't match his brother's strength and courage. Despite that, as soon as Tiger showed him kindness again (like letting him take the meat he had retrieved from a monster that stole it from the younger one, after saying that he'd have to fight him for it), Gray Wolf would run to the older brother's side and pester him with nuzzles.
Due to Master Moo's corruption, Gray Wolf suffered a number of personality changes, including:
- becoming way more sadistic, enjoying raiding villages and watching his Cabalos kill innocent monsters and humans alike;
- becoming ruthless, beating up his brother several times when he was blind and defenseless;
- being treacherous in battles, not keeping his promise to stick to certain rules;
- deceiving others for his own gain, trying to convince the Searchers that Tiger had agreed to becoming a baddie;
- acting resentful towards his brother, convinced by Moo's brainwashing that Tiger had done nothing to prevent his brother's kidnapping
After being resurrected by Nina, all these changes were reverted. Without Moo's influence, Gray Wolf went back to showing huge respect and love for his brother, which isn't entirely good on its own. He can let these feelings interfere with his goals, as seen when he struggled with the idea of possibly fighting against his brother on the Greatest 4 tournament. He also learned to love a human as his trainer, something he had never done before, wanting to win the tournament so her wish would come true. Even then, he behaves stoically and cold towards her, being annoyed with the way she messes with his mane.
Abilities[]
Gray Wolf's fighting capacities before becoming a baddie had no remarkable traits. As a pup, he depended exclusively on his brother's help to get food, but, when he grew up, they started hunting together, probably having matured and grown stronger, though not excessively so. After being taken and corrupted by Moo's evil influence, he became more powerful, cunning and also treachearous when his strength alone wasn't enough to beat his opponents, often preferring to let his Cabalos troops subdue their opponent by outnumbering them. He possesses a wide range of techniques, including Lightning, Blizzard, Bite, Scratch, Charge, Tackle and an anime-exclusive tail swipe (used during his first fight against his brother). When charging guts during his fight against Tiger, his surrounding aura was blue.
After being brought back as a good monster, it wasn't mentioned whether he had to train to regain his strength and previously learned attacks, but it's very likely that he did, just like other monsters who were unlocked after the Phoenix reappeared (like Tiger and Naga). During the Greatest 4 tournament, he managed to beat every opponent until the finals, and, while fighting Tiger, the two seemed evenly matched. His powers could become suppressed, though, due to his reluctance to fight his brother, and he only launched a full-force attack (a Charge-Stab mix) after the brothers had a heart-to-heart. When charging guts for the final blow on the tournament, his aura was pink, like the Searchers'.
